AWARD FOR CREATIVITY IN RURAL LIFE: FANCY COMMUNITY HELP GROUP
WAND’s community development project in Fancy, St. Vincent and the Grenadines won an award for “Creativity in Rural Life” from the Women’s World Summit Foundation, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The Fancy project developed under WAND’s Community Intervention programme was one of 13 projects worldwide, and one of the two in the Americas to receive the award. The other laureate of the Americas was from Costa Rica. Other laureates were from Africa, Asia and Oceania and Europe. Introduced in 1994, this prize has already been awarded to 344 laureates in more than 100 countries (2008).

The winning project is one in which the women of the community-based organisation, Fancy Community Help Group (FCHG) developed their own version of a community banking system to provide emergency assistance to members, facilitate access to medical care not offered in their community, to enable members to invest in the children’s education and to invest in income earning activities such as farming.

At a press conference held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on October 15, 2008, International Day of the Rural Woman, WAND Tutor/Coordinator announced the award. Three executive members of the FCHG were present at the press conference.
