The Open Campus Cayman Launches Caring for the Elderly Certificate Course

“Caring for the Elderly” has had a huge response in the Cayman Islands.  The local Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) Course attracted some forty (40) persons for the first two cohorts in March - June and another thirty-six (36) participants have registered for the June - August sessions.

The “Caring for the Elderly” course is designed to provide members of the community with an understanding of the needs of persons who are unable to care for themselves due to age.
The course is being facilitated by local professionals and is geared at providing caregivers with the basic knowledge and skills to safely and competently care for these persons within their home setting, or in institutions that offer residential care to the elderly.   Some of the topics of focus include: Roles and Functions of Care Givers, Work Ethics, the Aging Process, Blood Pressure, Pulse and Temperature Checks, Bed Making, Meal Planning and Preparation, Feeding of the Elderly and Recording and Evaluating Care.

Local Site Staff at The UWI Open Campus, Cayman, Mrs. Jody-Ann Moore and Mrs. Paulette Chotan, have expressed their delight with the tremendous response to the launch of this course.  “We are truly excited to offer this professional certificate course and happy to see that the course participants have ‘shared the love’ and have recruited other persons to attend. This course comes at an opportune time to respond to the need to ensure the best care for the elders in our community,” they said.
