The Intercampus Postgraduate Debates 2017

The Debate Teams from All four UWI Campuses

The Intercampus Postgraduate Debates 2017 competition was held over two (2) days February 24 – 25, 2017, at the Beachcombers hotel, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Four teams participated in the competition. 

The teams were the Open Campus, who hosted the competition, St. Augustine Campus, Cave Hill Campus and the Mona Campus, who are the defending champions.

The preliminary round of the competition saw the Open Campus coming up against the St. Augustine debate team. The competitors debated the topic “The Zika virus should be treated as a priority crisis by CARICOM for 2017”. The Open Campus made proposition arguments while the St. Augustine team opposed the motion. 

In round two (2) of the competitions defending champions Mona Campus competed against the Cave Hill Campus. The teams discussed the topic, “An exclusive CARICOM currency will improve the CARICOM economy. The Cave Hill Campus argued in support of the topic while Mona Campus made opposing arguments.

On day two (2) of the competition, in round one (1) the Cave Hill team came up against the team from St. Augustine. They discussed the topic “The House believes that European nations involved in Caribbean Slavery have a normal responsibility to satisfy the reparations requests of CARICOM”. The second round of competition saw Open Campus debating against Mona Campus on the topic, “The House believes that Distance Learning should be the major mode of tertiary-level learning in the Caribbean”. 

The Mona Campus debaters were declared the winners with an overall score of one hundred and six (106) points, Cave Hill Campus placed second with one hundred and two (102) points, St. Augustine placed third with one hundred (100) points and the Open Campus took the fourth place with ninety four (94) points.

Vincentian Dallano Dazousa who represented the Cave Hill Campus was awarded the Best Speaker of the competition. 

The judges for the competition were Honourable Dr. Jules Ferdinand, Dr. Adrian Fraser and Ms. Mandella Campbell who are all local alumni of The University of the West Indies.
