Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence 2016/2017

Nominations are now open for the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence 2016/2017.

All current members of the academic staff, the senior administrative staff, and the professional staff (excluding executive management, registrars, bursars, part-time staff, and retired staff who have been re-hired on post-retirement contracts) who have been in the continuous service of the university for at least 5 years prior to the application or nomination are eligible.  Eligibility is also open to departments / units, where appropriate.

The UWI Open Campus Mourns Passing of Sir Dwight Venner

The Office of the Open Campus Principal, Jamaica. 23 December 2016 - The leadership, staff and students of the UWI Open Campus mourn the passing of our Campus Council Chair Sir Dwight Venner on Thursday December 22, 2016.  Sir Dwight was a regional giant whose passion, dedication and commitment to the development of the people of the region were legendary.  It was therefore no surprise that in 2008 Sir Dwight agreed to serve as the first Chairman of the newly formed Open Campus, a post that he held right up to the time of his passing.

The UWI Open Campus Principal receives Commonwealth of Learning Honorary Fellow Award

The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. 15 December 2016. The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) has conferred the title of Honorary Fellow on Dr Luz Longsworth, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Open Campus of The University of the West Indies in recognition of her leadership in higher education. Dr Longsworth was named among seven new honorary fellows at the Pan-Commonwealth Forum (PCF) on Open Learning, on 28 November 2016 during the 8th Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

UWItv: A game changer in Caribbean education and public outreach

The UWI Regional Headquarters Jamaica. 29 November 2016 – The UWI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles announced the launch of UWItv, a new multimedia public information and education service. UWItv is set to go live on December 1, 2016 - initially with three hours of programming per day, showcasing a diversity of UWI-owned content.

Gillian M. S. Bristol Named New Director of The Latin American Caribbean Centre

The University of the West Indies, Vice-Chancellery. 31 October 2016 – Gillian M.S.  Bristol, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Grenada to the United States of America, has been appointed Director of The University of the West Indies’ Latin American Caribbean Centre (LACC), effective August 1st 2016.

Damian Eisenghower Greaves (PhD) will be the Keynote Speaker for the Saint Lucia Country Conference to be held at Bay Gardens Hotel from 26-28 October, 2016. Montserrat Volcano Observatory Renews Contract with The UWI For Monitoring and Research
