Facts, Figures & Reports
What is the Open Campus?
The Open Campus is based on the idea that the high-quality university education, research, and services available at our institution should be open and available to all people who wish to reach their potential inside and outside of the Caribbean region.
The Open Campus adopts quality teaching and learning experiences, innovative pedagogic design, relevant research and community partnerships, to deliver face-to-face, blended and online learning to all of its communities.
Why an Open Campus?
The University of the West Indies (UWI) is implementing its 2007-2012 strategic plan. The vision of an Open Campus is a very important part of this plan as the UWI is consolidating and expanding its outreach sector under the umbrella of the UWI Open Campus to better serve its regional communities its key competitive advantages.
The Open Campus is therefore made up of the former outreach departments of the UWI, which included the former
Board for Non-Campus Countries & Distance
Education (BNCCDE)
UWI Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC)
Tertiary Level Institutions Unit (TLIU) and
School of Continuing Studies (SCS)
The SCS had also included several Specialised Research Units, namely the
Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC)
Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute (HLSTUEI)
Human Resources Development Unit (HRDU)
Social Welfare Training Centre (SWTC) and
Women and Development Unit (WAND)
All of these research and outreach units nowmake up the Consortium for Social Research and Development within the Open Campus.
